this is a science project, im trying to figure out how many volts or energy would it take to charge a car electric moter by a wind turbine. So that the car runs completely off the energy produced. also what size the car moter ,the battery ,and generator
The car battery is charged with power, as KW over a period of time, which is onergy as KWh. The motor is rated as power in KW, and uses power over time as energy in KWh. The power used by the motor varies however. Depends on how much acceleration, wind resistance and so on. It is minimal while cruising at a moderate speed, maximum when accelerating hard. You can assume it won’t exceed the maximum power rating for more than a few seconds.
The battery has to provide enough KWh for running the motor over a desired period of time/distance. Often the figures for cars are quoted as distance run (range), but even so the energy used depends on the number of stops and starts and the speeds used.
The power to recharge depends on the efficiency of charging (chemical efficiency and the electrical efficiency of the charger). Allow something like 130% of the energy used to get the battery recharged.
The link below has some figures like range (all electric) 40 miles, battery 16KWh, and recharging takes 8 hours or 3h with bigger power supply. From this we can assume:
The average energy usage is 0.4KWh per mile or 2.5 miles per KWh. This is something like 4.8c per mile from the grid in the US.
It takes 21KWh to recharge, and that is over 8 hours, so the charge power is 3KW or less over a period of time totalling to 21KWh, taking at least 8 hours. A 3KW wind generator is likely about 18 to 20 feet diameter, not all that small. It will only generate this power in significant (I should say strong) winds. It is likely to produce about 1KW average over a period of time in a region that is "good for wind". It does nothing until the wind speed exceeds a threshold, then increases as the wind speed.
In reality these figures may be different because the battery may not be fully discharged ever (toi ensure its life is long). This may mean only 8KWh is ever used or replaced in the 16KWh battery.
